Phantom Skies and Shifting Ground: Landscape, Culture, and Rephotography in Eadweard Muybridge's Illustrations of Central America

San Francisco Bulletin, August 3, 1877

Muybridge ”had occasion to make a series of experiments in photographing scenes offshore from the deck of a rolling vessel. These experiments resulted in the construction of an apparatus and the preparation of chemicals so as to permit the photographing in outline of a rapidly moving body.” (San Francisco Bulletin, August 3, 1877). Presumably, the deck of the rolling vessel was the steamship Honduras.
